Thomas Clarke

Settler of township lots: Lot 3, Conc. 1 Stanhope

Location: Map point in the approximate location on this irregular, waterfront property on the south bay of Kushog Lake (Kushog Marina).

Land acquisition: No record of ownership.

Dates of residency: A Thomas Clarke is recorded in the Stanhope Lands Subject to Taxation/Patent Register as having received a patent at this lot on April 1, 1867. However, the Ontario Land Registry Parcel Register Book (Image 18) records that Richard Henry Dawson received a patent to this lot on 20 Jun 1867. Further research is needed to determine if Thomas Clarke ever lived in Stanhope.

Interesting facts:

From the chapter "The Luck of the Eastern Townships": By 1871 Thomas Clark had settled at Hotspur, at the confluence of the Monck Road and the Burnt River branch; for many years he served as postmaster. However, the people gradually moved elsewhere until the Hotspur school was operating with only a teacher and two pupils. Source: In Quest of Yesterday by Nila Reynolds.
