The years before 1885 saw a steady influx of homesteaders to West Guilford, including Robert Cruickshanks. Source: In Quest of Yesterday by Nila Reynolds. Published by The Provisional County of Haliburton, Minden, Ontario 1973 pg. 154
In 1905 a disaster in triplicate occurred at Kennisis when Bobbie Cruickshanks, Ed McGuire and Archie Bird, all from the West Guilford settlement, chose June 14th to follow the Redstone-Kennisis canoe route north to the camps of the Shier Company and Mickle and Dyment for work on their spring drives. It was two weeks before relatives at the settlement became uneasy and sent Mark Sisson and Tom Scott north to inquire, and discovered that they never arrived. 22 year old Robert Hugh Cruickshanks sleeps at the foot of Maple Lake beside St. Peter's Church, with his parents Robert and Mary Cruickshanks.
