Interesting facts:
The fondest memories cherished by shantymen were of Saturday and Sunday recreation nights when each man took his turn reciting a poem, telling a story of singing a song. A violin was a must so every fall the gang would contribute money for a camp fiddle and just before the spring break-up a fiddler's contest would be held with the instrument as prize. Mr. Stan Cooper still has a violin his father, George Cooper, acquired in this way. Source: In Quest of Yesterday by Nila Reynolds. pg. pg. 49
