Green Lake HIstory

GREEN LAKE HISTORY

Location: Guilford Township

Officially Named: by Geographic Board of Canada gazette 1962

Also Known As: Grass Lake (MNR archives)

Although there may be tension initially (or even indefinitely) connected to the selection of an official name, people can still have their history told by simply not referring to a place by its official name. Although this practice creates much confusion (especially for outsiders) about which lake in being referred to, it is actually a very powerful way for local people to continue to have their history remembered. Green Lake/Grass Lake is one of the best examples of this. Green Lake has been this lake’s official name since it appeared in the Ontario gazette om 1962. However, many local people still refer to it by its old name, Grass Lake. "Locals on the north shore of this lake refer to it as Green Lake, where a restaurant named the Green Canoe was located. Locals on the south shore call the lake Grass Lake" (Source: Perkins, M.
